Long story short:
1. Mom wants a camera. There's only one camera between both of my parents and she thinks my dad is a camera hog.2. Being the good daughter I am, I offer my trusty Canon SD750 to her since it's a great camera and I hardly use it since someone who shall remain nameless but happens to be obsessed with taking pictures has chronicled my entire medical school career for me.
3. Mom goes, "Aren't you going to London/Beijing/traveling the world? You definitely should have a camera with you."
4. Thus, the fantasy of buying a new camera is born.
Off I go searching for the best new camera since I am a big technophile. I love those shiny gadgets.
Anyways, here are my top choices and my top pros and cons which are completely biased towards my preferences. Just for the sake of full disclosure. Not that it isn't obvious.
1. Canon SD980IS
- 12MP with 5x optical zoom.
- It's got a 3.0 inch touchscreen LCD plus side buttons so I can go either way with the controls depending on my mood.
- It records HD movies. How cool is that?
- It is available at Costco, which is key for my parents who harbor a deep abiding love of buying things from Costco.
Weirdsies:
- It takes 24mm pics, and the display is configured for that and not 35mm normal pics. I'm not sure how I feel about that since I have a pack of like 100 unused photo printer paper for 35mm. I guess I could crop it when I print but I'm lazy.
EDIT: Re-reading my blog, I just realized I was totally stupid here. That's what you get for blogging at 4:00am. What I meant was the screen is configured for a widescreen aspect ratio. I had to edit this so I won't go down in internet history as an idiot.
Cons:
- Reviews are good but not that great. Still made best compact camera on CNET, which is my go-to tech source, but Amazon only has a three and a half stars rating so that makes me wonder ... what the heck is wrong with it?
- I barely take pictures as it is. Will I really take HD movies? Granted I haven't factored in the whole travel thing but I don't know if I need the best and newest camera from Canon.
2. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1
Pros:
- It's waterproof. WATERPROOF.
- It's also supposed to be shockproof and dustproof too.
- Apparently it takes good pictures and HD movies on top of all of that. It's Editor's Choice after all.
Weirdsies:
- It comes in green but not in a pretty green.
Blah. Like regurgitated pea soup. Yum.
Cons:
- I am a big obsessive stalker fan of Canon and this is not Canon.
- The 2.7 LCD doesn't look that big to me.
- I also think it's kinda ugly. I guess I'm just that shallow.
- Am I really going to take underwater pictures? Really?! I can just get a cheap plastic bag for a non-waterproof regular camera and still be fine.
3. Canon Powershot SD1200 IS
Pros:
- It's green. I know I should be embarrassed about my obsession with owning green things but I'm not.
- It's super cheap. It's half the price of the others at about $150.
- It's one of the best ranked budget cameras, and it's one of the most popular sold on Amazon. That many people can't be all wrong. Then again, half of the country voted for Bush. Twice.
Weirdsies:
- The only reason I like this camera is because it's green and cheap. That's probably the stupidest reason I've ever heard.
- In theory, this is really all I would need for traveling, but I'm not particularly happy about it because it doesn't meet my new and shiny gadget threshold.
Cons:
- It only has a 2.5 LCD which does not appeal to my love of flash and shiny.
- It's 10MP vs the 12MP of the other cameras plus no HD movies.
- It is sold at Costco but not in green. That's like fate laughing at me.
4. Samsung DualView TL225
Pros:
- It has a hidden front 1.5 LCD that you can activate to see if your picture looks good. That way I can take self-portraits of myself over and over and over until it looks decent. Which is kinda weird and narcissistic and OCD all rolled into one.
- It has a huge 3.5 touchscreen back LCD.
Weirdsies:
- Everything is controlled by touchscreen and touchscreen, as per my phone usage, can be a pain in the butt sometimes.
Cons:
- It also records HD video but needs an adapter for HDMI output and I am not a big buy-another-adaptor fan. That is one more thing I do not need to carry with me.
- It uses microSD card. What the heck kinda camera uses a microSD card?
- Non-Canon. Non-Costco. Non-Green. Nuff said.
So...ultimately I have no idea what I want.
Canon? Waterproof? Cheap and green? Egotistical self portraits?
What is more important?
I'm open to suggestions.

Costco is selling the nikon coolpix camera too in case you're interested....it's the ashton kutcher commercial camera! :)
I actually ended up getting a Panasonic Lumix SZ3. It's big and chunky for a "compact" point and shoot but the pictures are amazing. They really are.
